UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Saturday welcomed the peaceful transition in Malawi after the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

A statement, issued here by Ban's spokesman, said, "The secretary-general welcomes the peaceful transition in Malawi. He looks forward to working with the government under acting President Joyce Banda."

Mutharika, 78, died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Friday. Banda, who was born in 1950 and had been serving as vice president under Mutharika, was sworn in as the new president Saturday.

"The secretary-general is saddened by the death" of Mutharika, and "he offers his condolences to the bereaved family, the government and the people of Malawi," said the statement.

The new Malawian president, a women rights advocator, called for unity and forgiveness, saying it was time to move forward as a nation that fears God and that she hoped that there would be no room for revenge.
