Egypt carried out an operation against criminal activities in Assuit governorate on Thursday, leading to the deaths of two policemen and eight gunmen and the injury of one security officer, official MENA news agency reported.

During their wide inspecting campaign to arrest dangerous members in Arab Salabat in Assuit, security personnel were forced to exchange fire with gunmen who started shooting first.

Security forces found eight automatic weapons in the scene, and are still searching for other persons in the neighboring area, the report said.
