Six soldiers from the 18th Infantry Battalion were injured following Tuesday's ambush staged by the combined forces of the Abu Sayyaf and lost command group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in southern Philippines.

Local police reported the rebels attacked government troops around 7:55 a.m., local time in the remote village of Sungkayot, Basilan province.

The soldiers were on their way to the headquarters when several rebels pounced on them with automotive gunfire.

The wounded soldiers were rushed to the Camp Navarro General Hospital based inside the military headquarters in this city for treatment.
