The European Commission on Thursday launched a new training center mainly to combat trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials, which is based in Karlsruhe, southwest Germany.

"Training and international cooperation in detection are key elements.. The center will make emergency personnel better equipped to prevent and tackle nuclear incidents," said the EU's home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom.

Frontline officers and experts will be provided with hands-on training that uses a wide variety of radioactive and nuclear materials. One of the indoor training areas simulates airport conditions while the training outdoors have four types of radiation portal monitors, according to the Commission.

The training programs were developed in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the U.S. Department of Energy.
