Chinese and Laotian police have arrested four suspects in relation to a drug trafficking case, the Ministry of Public Security said Friday.
In one of the largest drug seizures in the past few years, police also seized 1.5 tonnes of methamphetamine, according to a statement from the ministry.
The statement said the methamphetamine was seized in Laos on May 23, 2012, after Laotian police were alerted to the criminal activity by Chinese police. Chinese police learned in April 2012 that a drug trafficking gang in Myanmar was preparing to move a large amount of drugs to China via Laos.
Four police officers from the Chinese side went to Laos on May 22, 2012 to help develop a plan for intercepting the traffickers. The plan proved successful the following day.
Also on Friday, "Safe River," a joint police campaign against drug trafficking, was launched in southwest China's Yunnan Province by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
The ministry statement said drug trafficking from northern Myanmar to China has been on the rise in recent years, and Chinese law enforcement authorities specializing in drug trafficking will give full play to the Mekong River-area law enforcement cooperation mechanism established by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
