Singapore ranked first as the safest place to be born in Asia, together with western developed countries like Sweden, Estonia, Cyprus, Iceland and Luxembourg leading among a first-ever Birth Day Risk Index released by children's aid agency Save the Children on Tuesday.

The index showed that these countries have the world's lowest first-day mortality rates at less than 0.5 death in the first day per 1,000 live births.

It is part of the main foundings of the 14th annual State of the World's Mothers report.

According to the report, nearly 3 million babies die within the first month of life, while more than a third of these babies die on their first day of life -- making the birth day the riskiest day for newborns and mothers almost everywhere.

The report also named Singapore as the best place to be a mother in Asia, ranking first in Asia and the 15th in the world. Finland, Sweden and Norway ranked the top three in the world.

The annual Mothers' Index uses the latest data on women's health, children's health, educational attainment, economic well- being and female political participation to rank 176 countries and show where mothers and children fare best and where they face the greatest hardships.
