Libyan Defense Minister Mohamed al- Bargathi tendered his resignation to the Libyan Prime Minister on Tuesday, state-run Libyan news agency reported.

The move came on the backdrop of a siege imposed by gunmen on government ministries for more than a week, the report said.

Last week, scores of gunmen surrounded Libya's justice ministry and foreign ministry in the capital Tripoli to demand approval of the political isolation law.

The militiamen call for banning those working under the former administration of the fallen leader Muammar al-Gaddafi from holding senior positions.

The siege continued this week in spite of a adoption of a law to ban gaddafi-era officials from their posts.
