A military aircraft crashed on Thursday afternoon at an air force base in southern Nigeria's River State, aviation sources said.

The sources, who declined to be named, told Xinhua that casualties were yet to be counted by officials after the aircraft crash landed at the Port Harcourt Military airport and went aflame.

"It is expected that the Air Force authorities will officially communicate the details of the ill-fated aircraft's emergency landing and casualties figure to journalists later in the day," one of the sources said.

However, the Nigerian military authorities have, so far, declined to officially confirm the air mishap to reporters.

Thursday's air mishap in Nigeria occurred barely 72 hours after an Alpha Jet, also belonging to the Nigerian air force, crashed on Monday in the Nigerien capital Niamey, killing two pilots.

The Alpha Jet was on a non-combat mission when the mishap occurred.
