The Old Town of Slovak capital city Bratislava declared a state of emergency on Tuesday afternoon due to the rising water level of the Danube River, local authorities' spokesman Tomas Halan said.

The spokesperson said there was no immediate threat to the public, but preventive safety measures were necessary.

People in the city center have been asked to check their underground premises and remove all dangerous and precious materials, as the rising level of the Danube will also cause underground water levels to increase.

Local authorities have also announced that cars parked in the streets near to the Danube River may be removed by the city police.
