More and more women in Germany are remaining childless, as 22 of 100 women between 40 and 44 years old have not given birth to a child, the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Wiesbaden.

In eastern Germany, the proportion of childless women has increased by 5 percent to 20 percent this year and in western Germany, it rose by one percent.

The number of women, who have a child before 30 years old, has therefore dwindled. In 2012, eastern German women had their first child at 28 years old on average, and western women with 29 years old.

Later marriages, more childless female academics and stagnant birth rate are the contemporary trends in Germany, the Federal Statistical Office said.
