At least 20 students and their school bus driver were killed while 20 other students injured after a speeding train rammed into the bus at an unmanned crossing in the southern Indian state of Telangana Thursday, a senior police official said.

"The mishap happened at Masayapeta in the state's Medak district near capital Hyderabad when the school bus driver rolled the vehicle, carrying some 40 students, on to the rail tracks at the unmanned crossing unaware of the approaching train," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While 20 students and the bus driver were killed on the spot, those injured have been rushed to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said, adding that the death toll could rise.

Local TV channels showed footage of mangled remains of the bus and the bodies of the children strewn around the rail tracks.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chadrasekhara Rao has expressed grief over the incident.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.
