A Chinese fighter jet conducted a "dangerous intercept" of a US Navy patrol plane in international air space, the Pentagon has said.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said on Friday evening at a press conference that the US had protested to the Chinese military over the mid-air intercept, which took place on Tuesday 135 miles (215 km) east of Hainan Island.

An armed Chinese fighter jet flew close to the P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft three times, he said, and "it is certainly not in keeping with the kind of military-to-military ... relations that we'd like to have with China."
