China will provide solar power generators and solar lamps to poverty-stricken areas of other developing countries to ensure a more reliable electricity supply and thereby improve the learning conditions of primary and secondary schools.
The effort, known as "A Ray of Sunshine," was launched in Xi'an on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, on the eve of China's annual commemoration of the International Day of Peace, which was scheduled on Sept. 23 in the same city.
As another sideline of the commemoration, the Art Exhibition on Peace was launched at the same time. Sales revenues from the exhibition will be given to the "Sunshine" project.
The Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD), along with a number of other peace-seeking national organizations and societies in China, such as the Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU), the China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE) and the China Foundation for Peace and Development (CFPD), will oversee the running of the aid program.
The four initiators will mobilize their member organizations, council members and other social channels to raise funds, and implement the project in collaboration with NGOs in countries that require aid. "A Ray of Sunshine" will be a long-term project consisting of various programs targeting different countries, said Han Qide, president of CPAPD and vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
The "Sunshine" from China, which represents peace, international harmony and the fraternal ties between China and other developing countries will "light up the lives of these children and their families," said Han, referring to the project's theme as "sharing sunshine, friendship and hope."
