About 30 percent of Cote d'Ivoire adolescents are victims of rape, the country's Solidarity Minister Anne Desire Ouloto said over the weekend.

"With regards to sexual violence, adolescents are the most exposed and the age bracket between 10 to 14 years is the most affected. About 30 percent of this group was affected by rape in 2014," Madam Ouloto said in an official statement on behalf of the government.

"A demographic and health survey carried out in Cote d'Ivoire between 2011-12 showed that 31 percent of adolescents are circumcised. Another survey carried out during the 2012-13 academic year showed that 5,076 cases of early pregnancy were reported in schools across the national territory," she revealed.

The minister further raised the need to discuss the issue of violence committed against girls and the need to promote their human rights to guarantee their protection and security.

"Cote d'Ivoire has resolved to fight against gender based violence, especially that facing girls. It is in this regard that initiatives have been taken to promote and protect the fundamental rights of the girl-child," Ouloto added.
