The statement said when the explosion occurred, the convoy of three vehicles were proceeding from the Baghdad International Airport to the International Zone. All UN personnel returned safely to the compound, and one of the vehicles sustained serious damage.

"The unfortunate incident will not deter the UN from continuing its work in support of Iraq and its people, who have lived with violence for too long. I look forward to working together with the government of Iraq in ensuring that the perpetrators of this attack are brought to justice," the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Nickolay Mladenov said in the statement.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. Terrorism and violence have killed 5,576 civilians in Iraq in the first half of this year, with 11,666 more wounded, according to a recent UN report.
