37 killed in bomb attacks in Iraq

A total of 37 people were killed and 92 others wounded in separate bomb attacks in Iraq Thursday evening, police sources said.

A police source told Xinhua that 12 people were killed and 41 others wounded when a car bomb exploded Thursday evening near a popular market in Sadr City district, eastern Baghdad, adding that some shops destroyed by the huge blast.

Minutes later, another car bomb detonated near a group of restaurants in the same district, leaving nine people killed and 28 others wounded.

In a separate accident, a civilian was killed and three others injured when a roadside bomb exploded in the Karrada district, downtown of Baghdad, the source said.

Also, a suicide bomber with an explosive vest blew himself up in a cafe in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing at least 15 people and wounding 20 others, a local police told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years, leaving 5,576 civilians killed in Iraq in the first half of this year, with 11,666 more wounded, according to a recent UN report.
