The 395-soldier unit successfully has completed 697 security missions such as patrolling and escorting during its nine-month deployment.

"The U.N. Secretary-General said that China and its peacekeeping role in Mali were very important," said Albert Gerard Koenders, U.N. Special Representative for Mali, "but now I would have to say China's important work has exceeded expectations."

The contingent was sent to Mali at the end of last year after the United Nations Security Council decided to establish the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali in April 2013.

The last 194 officers and troops from the first peacekeeping unit returned to China in September, and a second Chinese peacekeeping force comprised of 395 officers and troops has begun peacekeeping operations in Mali.
