A total of 48 militants have been killed as Afghan army waged offensives in five provinces within the last 24 hours, the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Several Taliban militants were wounded, three detained, as weapons and ammunition were recovered following the operations launched in Uruzgan, Kandahar, Kunduz, Helmand and Kabul provinces over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement.

Four Afghan army soldiers lost their lives as a result of heavy enemy firing and roadside bomb attacks over the same period, according to the statement.

The army specialists have recovered and defused 31 roadside bombs and landmines besides defusing one rocket since early Monday, said the statement.

Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in the restive provinces as they assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops earlier this year.

The Taliban has yet to make comments.
