The Libyan branch of the Islamic State (IS) on Sunday claimed responsibility for attack on Iranian ambassador's residence in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

A device exploded outside of the Iranian ambassador's residence in Tripoli on Sunday, but no casualties were reported, according to a security source.

The device blew up at the gate of the ambassador's residence, causing material damage, but nobody was hurt, the source told Xinhua.

The Libyan branch of the IS claimed responsibility by Twitter account for the attack, and admitted that its militants attacked Libya's Labraq in the eastern of the North African country.

Rockets have been fired at Labraq airport from the IS-controlled city of Derna overnight Friday into Saturday, also no casualties were reported.

On Friday, the Libyan branch of the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for car bombs killing at least 45 people in the eastern Libyan city of Al-Gubba.

Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, has been witnessing a frayed political process after its former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled during the 2011 political turmoil.

The country is now deadlocked in a dogfight between the pro-secular army and Islamist militants. The turmoil makes an ideal hotbed and recruiting ground for terrorism.
