During her China visit, the top UNDP official said on Monday that "China has been a very good neighbour to Nepal, coming straight away to the support of Nepal in the aftermath of the catastrophe." Clark applauded China's participation in Nepal's quake relief efforts, especially when the same earthquake also affected parts of China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Chinese government will carry out a new round of quake relief assistance, according to Xu Shuqiang, who is in charge of Chinese national medical teams in Nepal, Xinhua News Agency reported. He said the new round of assistance to Nepal will be based on its needs and China's relief experience in previous natural disasters.

The death toll from the massive earthquake in Nepal stood at 7,365 as of May 4, while the number of injured is feared to be twice as high, said Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs.

Clark noted that China has stepped up its disaster response efforts in recent years by enacting new measures to raise its response readiness capacity and by increasing its willingness to share its disaster relief experience with other countries.

"A primary work for UNDP is disaster reduction, because if you don't develop knowing the risks, you stand to see everything you ever gained shaken down or washed away by extreme disaster," said Clark, who is also a former prime minister of New Zealand.

China's effort to help with Nepal's quake relief shows that China is ready to assume the responsibility of a global role and proves China's growing importance in global development, Clark asserted. She added that the Chinese-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the "Belt and Road" initiatives are also examples of this.
