Fighter jets Wednesday pounded hideouts of the militants in two tribal regions and killed 31, the Pakistani military said on Wednesday.

"Thirty one terrorists were killed in Khyber Agency and North Waziristan Agency today," an army statement said.

In Khyber Agency, 14 terrorists were killed near Pakistan- Afghanistan border, while 17 were killed in Sarawak area of North Waziristan, it said.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the Pakistani security forces also destroyed several hideouts of the terrorists.

The grounds forces were fighting the militants in the rugged mountainous region in North Waziristan after clearing the towns of the armed groups. The fleeing militants have fled to inaccessible mountains to avoid aerial bombing.

The major operation code-named "Zarb-e-Azb" was started in mid June when a deadly militant attack at Jinnah Airport Karachi, which killed 28 people including attackers, officially ended three- month-long peace negotiations between the government and Taliban.

Apart from the "Zarb-e-Azb," the Pakistani army launched another operation in Khyber Agency in October last year for flushing out the insurgents involved in carrying out attacks at Pakistani army and public.
