About 22 police personnel were feared killed and seven others went missing after Taliban militants attacked security checkpoint in Naw Zad district of Afghanistan's south province of Helmand overnight, said a provincial source on Wednesday.

The attack took place at midnight after hundreds of militants stormed Afghan Border Police force checkpoints in Qalami Kariz locality of the district in northern of provincial capital. At least seven border policemen were also injured in the attack, the source told Xinhua anonymously.

Omar Zwak, provincial government spokesman, confirmed the incident.

"The attack occurred late last night. The fierce clashes have resulted in casualties and an investigation has been launched into the incident. More information will be made public afterwards," Zwak said.

The source added that some 35 Taliban militants were also killed in resultant clashes.
