France will send its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to participate in operations against Islamic States and its affiliates, French presidential office the Elysee announced Thursday.

French President Francois Hollande convened a restricted meeting of the Defense Council on Syria and Iraq, during which he reiterated the "importance of supporting the Vienna process towards a political transition, the only solution to the Syrian conflict."

"The deployment of the battle group formed around the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was decided to participate in operations against IS and its affiliates," the Elysee said.

The council also examined potential terrorist threats to France.

On Sept. 27, France launched its first air strikes against IS targets in Syria to halt the group's progress in the region and ensure security at home.
