Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he hopes to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in a bid to defuse the crisis over Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane.

Erdogan expressed his hopes that the two could meet at the United Nations climate change summit.

"On Monday there will be a meeting in Paris, I believe Mr (Vladimir) Putin will be there, attending. I would like to meet him there and maybe talk (about) this in a reasonable way."

He adds there is big potential for cooperation between Russia and Turkey despite tension over the downing of the plane.

Erdogan says he has called Putin, but the Russian President did not return his phone call.

Turkey shot down the Russian warplane Tuesday in northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border, after saying it entered Turkish airspace. Russia denies the aircraft ever left Syrian airspace.
