An Egyptian court sentenced two policemen to five years in prison on Saturday for torturing a lawyer to death at a Cairo police station, official MENA news agency reported.

The two policemen, working for the most superior National Security Department, were convicted of beating a lawyer to death at a Matariya police station earlier in February while forcing him to confess committing crimes in favor of the now-blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group.

Reports showed that they caused massive injuries to the lawyer that eventually led to his death.

Another policeman was also sentenced Thursday to five years in jail after being convicted of torturing a detainee to death at a police station.

Also on Thursday, the prosecution referred nine policemen to criminal court for torturing a citizen to death at Upper Egypt's Luxor Police Station.

In a recent speech at the Police Academy in Cairo, President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi admitted violations of some police officers, considering them as "individual cases" and vowing to punish those involved. He also praised the role of the police for sacrificing their lives to secure the nation.
