Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Tuesday that Syria's issues would be resolved through political means, as a new round of UN-mediated Syria peace talks continued into the second day.

"The future of Syria would be decided politically not militarily, and we will remain by the Syrians to this end," Rouhani said in a televised speech, adding Iran is ready to work with regional states to eradicate terrorism.

The Iranian president said Iran favors the integrity of all regional states and is opposed to "disintegration" of any country in the region. "That is why, we have actively participated in a number of conferences including the ones about Syria," he said.

Rouhani rejected comments that Iran seeks to become the sole powerful country of the region, saying it wants a "powerful region."

On Tuesday, a new round of UN-mediated Syria peace talks continued into the second day, aiming to find a lasting peace for the country which has been at war for almost five years.

Iran has emerged as an unwavering regional ally to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his stubborn fight against militants who seek the overthrow of his government.
