Iran to hold presidential election in May next year

Iran's high legislative body on Wednesday announced May 2017 as the date for the next presidential election in the country.

With reference to the proposal of Interior Ministry regarding the date for the 12th presidential election, Guardian Council on its Wednesday meeting decided on May 19, 2017 as the election day, the council's website announced.

Iran's Guardian Council of Constitution, the top legislative body of the country, is responsible for interpreting the Constitution of Iran, supervising elections and approving candidates to the presidency and the parliament with the criteria of Islam.

Iran's presidential election is held every four years by the direct vote of the people.

President Hassan Rouhani ascended to the office by winning the election in 2013.
