Russia to conduct observation flight over Turkey

Russian inspectors will start on Monday an observation flight over the Turkish territory under the Open Skies Treaty to monitor compliance with the treaty, said a senior Russian defense official said on Monday.
The observational flight, which was canceled by Ankara in February, "will be carried out between Oct. 24 and Oct. 28 with the maximum range of 1,900 kilometers using the Eskisehir air base (In Turkey) to refuel," Russian news agency TASS quoted Sergey Zabello, acting chief of the Defense Ministry's National Nuclear Risk Reduction Center, as saying.
The Russian flight will use an An-30B aircraft with Turkish specialists on board, he added.
The flight is part of the confidence-building measures in Europe after the Cold War under the international Open Skies Treaty, which establishes a program of unarmed aerial surveillance flights over the entire territory of its 34 state parties, including Russia and most members of North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The treaty was signed in March 1992 and took effect at the beginning of 2002.
