German police sealed off a square between Cologne Cathedral and the city's main railway station as a suspicious black draw-bar box was found Sunday afternoon abandoned in the middle of the square.

Security lines have been placed by the police. People within 100 meter radius around were evacuated.

Local police said via twitter that the unclaimed luggage is to be checked and it remains unclear if there is explosive substance in the box.

The parade on Rose Monday as the carnival climax is scheduled to start in Cologne on Monday morning, with more than 10,000 people expected to celebrate the religious holiday.
