Eight people are confirmed dead following flash flooding at the Cold Springs swimming hole, north of Payson, in the western U.S. state of Arizona, according to local media.

A wall of debris-choked water washed down the East Verde and killed at least eight people on Saturday afternoon, with two others still missing and presumed dead, local media Paysonroundup.com reported.

Authorities said 14 people were swimming in the area and were swept away in the flash flood after heavy rains. The group was made up adults and children that officials believe were related or close friends. The victims range in age from 24-months to in their 60s, according to the Gila County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency responders rescued four people Saturday south of the Cold Springs swimming hole where the group had been swimming, including a man clutching a baby.

Search crews are still looking for the two people who went missing. But local officials said they did not expect to find any more survivors.
