The boss of a notorious Chicago street gang was sentenced on Thursday to 40 years in prison for his involvement in multiple murders.

Gregory "Bowlegs" Chester was convicted with five other Hobos gang leaders of conspiracy charges, alleging the gang carried out eight murders over a decade.

Chester, 40, in a brief statement, said "I want to apologize to the court and my family for my behavior and ask that you please have mercy on me. That's it."

U.S. District Judge John Tharp told the court that Chester did not pull the trigger in the crimes, otherwise he would have been sentenced to life in prison.

Hobos is notorious for its violent crimes, reported the Chicago Tribune.
