Barbara Woodward, the British ambassador to China, has paid her first official visit to Changchun City, to further enhance UK cooperation with Jilin Province and northeast China.

During her visit, the Ambassador met Bayinchaolu, party secretary of Jilin Province, Liu Guozhong, governor of Jilin Province and Liu Changlong, mayor of Changchun.

Their discussions covered a wide range of areas, including the regional benefits of the 'Golden Era' in China-UK relations. Talks also included China's northeast revitalisation and urbanisation, with the UK's world-class expertise offering great opportunities for close cooperation with China and the region.

Innovative British businesses are keen to expand their work with Jilin, including in rail and manufacturing, professional skills training, public-private partnerships, education and life sciences. The Northeast Revitalisation provides even more opportunities for commercial cooperation between the UK and Jilin.

Highlighting UK-China people-to-people links, the ambassador and Zhang Jing'an, vice mayor of Changchun, opened the 'Spirit of Youth' football training event.

Supported by the British Embassy, Changchun Sports Bureau and Cardiff City Football Club, the event saw British-born Yatai Football Club player, Jack Sealy, join two Cardiff City coaches to help dozens of young local footballers to experience top level football training – a taste of the top sports teams and training facilities the UK is renowned for.

Barbara Woodward said she was delighted to visit Changchun.

"I am delighted to visit Changchun. Some UK regions share similar challenges with northeast China including industrial reform – our regional cities have much to learn from each other. The UK is committed to engaging with China's northeast provinces. My visit to Jilin and the 'Spirit of Youth' football training event reinforce our commitment. I look forward to even stronger UK ties with the province and northeast China, from government to government, business to business and people to people."

The ambassador's visit follows a UK delegation, led by the Chargé D'affaires, attending the Third Northeast China Revitalisation Forum in Changchun last month.
