A senior Russian National Guard lieutenant was shot dead after killing four fellow servicemen at a military base in the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya in southern Russia, Russian media reported Monday, quoting the National Guard's press service.

According to preliminary information, the senior officer fatally injured four of his fellow servicemen at one of Chechnya's military units at around 4:00 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. GMT).

"The serviceman who opened fire in the barracks was eliminated by the on-duty team," a National Guard spokesman said.

The military investigation service has launched an inquiry into the incident, but no immediate information about the causes of the incident or the shooter's motive is available for the moment, according to the spokesman.
