Mozambique and Portugal signed in Maputo on Monday a memorandum of understanding that will enable Portugal to provide technical and equipment support to Mozambican armed forces.

The MoU was signed by Mozambican Minister of Defense, Atanasio M' Mtumuke and his Portuguese counterpart Jose Alberto Lopes on his visit in Mozambique until the coming Saturday.

"This cooperation aims essentially at the support from the Portuguese Armed Forces to the Mozambican Armed Forces in the defense domain, including the army, the marines and the country's air force," said Mozambican minister.

As part of this agreement, Mozambique will send its officials to study in the Portuguese military school and Portugal will have its instructors lecturing in Mozambique as well.

On Monday the Portuguese defense minister handed over to the Mozambican forces 10 motorboats for transportation of military goods.

The Portuguese minister expects the motorboats will contribute for the country's maritime safety.

"With the mission to carry out a task of cooperating with such a friendly country, the Portuguese Armed Forces will continue working at full capacity with Mozambican Armed Forces," said the Portuguese minister.

The signed memo is expected to be in operation until 2021.
