Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Wednesday that he was ready to resign in the wake of the murder of a journalist and his fiancee, provided that no early polls are called.
In a statement, Fico told said that he would resign from his post if Slovak President Andrej Kiska will respect the continuity of the ruling of the three-party coalition of Smer-SD, Most-Hid and Slovak National Party.
"A possible early election would cause huge instability in the country. Therefore (we) should continue the current coalition with the new prime minister nominated by my party, Smer-SD. This is the best solution," Fico said.
Other coalition leaders, Bela Bugar and Andrej Danko, appreciated the decision of Fico and expected the calming of the situation in country.
There had been massive protests in several Slovak cities with demonstrators demanding a new government and an independent investigation of the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova.
