China and the United States share great potential for cooperation in promoting environmental protection and green development.
This was one of the key messages of the 2018 Annual Conference on Sustainability, co-hosted by the Paulson Institute and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges in Beijing on May 9.
U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad said that the collaboration between China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, is crucial to addressing important environmental issues.
He said companies that have helped the United States tackle environmental problems are ready and willing to promote sustainability in China with their innovative environmental solutions.
According to the ambassador, two major memorandums of understanding involving liquid natural gas were signed between the two countries during U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to China last November, which Branstad said is a good example of bilateral cooperation on environment protection.
At the opening of this year's Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his keynote speech that "economic globalization is an irreversible trend of our times." He advocated increased exchanges and cooperation to "jointly meet challenges in climate change, environmental protection, energy conservation and emissions reduction."
His statement was echoed by the Chinese speakers at Wednesday's conference.
Zhou Xiaochuan, the former governor of the People's Bank of China, said that China will continue to enhance international cooperation on green finance and facilitate the sharing of experience to boost its development.
Shi Zihai, the deputy secretary general of China's National Development and Reform Commission, also said that international exchange and collaboration are important for China to promote green development.
"China will learn from the advanced practices of other countries, including the United States, to explore a path towards green development that fits China's reality," he said.
Henry M. Paulson Jr., the chairman of the Paulson Institute, said the annual conference is dedicated to "creating more opportunities for China and the United States to take joint or complementary action on important global problems."
According to Paulson, the theme of this year's conference, "New Era, New Drivers," represents what he called "a fundamental shift happening in the Chinese economy."
He said that rapid growth is no longer the focus of the Chinese economy, and that pursuing quality and sustainability of growth has instead become its defining feature.
