The Azerbaijan embassy in China celebrated the 100th anniversary of its Republic Day in Beijing on May 28.

Kong Xuanyou, deputy foreign minister of China, and Akram Zeynalli, Azerbaijan ambassador to China, attended the celebration reception.

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic became independent in 1918 and proclaimed the establishment of the modern republic in 1991.

The ambassador said Azerbaijan has always attached special importance to its relations with China. He noted a visit by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to China in 2015, when the president witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the joint promotion of the Silk Road Economic Belt between Azerbaijan and China.

"It was the beginning of a new stage in the development of the relations between our countries and defined new targets for the future development of bilateral relations," he said.

The ambassador also revealed that Azerbaijani Parliamentary speaker Ogtay Asadov will pay an official visit to China in three weeks. He said that "will open a new stage in the inter-parliamentary cooperation between Azerbaijan and China."

Kong Xuanyou, deputy foreign minister of China, noted that since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and China in 1992, the two countries have maintained sound and steady relations, with fruitful cooperation in energy, trade and economy, investment, and infrastructure building.

China is the fourth largest trading partner and third largest source of import for Azerbaijan, according to Kong. He added that China is willing to strengthen the friendly relations with Azerbaijan, which will benefit the two countries and their people.
