India's ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) pulled out of an alliance government with regional People's Democratic Party (PDP) in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir Tuesday, officials said.

With the breaking of alliance, the region has automatically come under the Indian president's rule, and the state would be run by the region's governor.

"It's untenable for BJP to continue in alliance with PDP, hence we are withdrawing," Ram Madhav, BJP general secretary told the media.

The two parties, which entered an alliance in 2015, had been running the government since then.
