Organized by the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament, the seminar was attended by some 50 renowned scholars on security issues from China and 20 other countries including the United States, Russia, Japan, Germany and India.

Scholars exchanged views on issues including China-U.S. relations and Asia-Pacific security, security conditions and prospects in northeastern Asia and the construction of an Asia-Pacific security mechanism.

"Security is the prerequisite for development and development is the basis of security," said Song Tao, minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, during his keynote speech at the seminar. "Asia-Pacific countries need to focus on development, explore more cooperation space, enhance connectivity, deepen shared interests, enable all nations and people to share the benefits of development, and realize sustainable security through sustainable development."

Equality, mutual respect and trust are key to consolidating the political basis of Asia-Pacific security, Song noted. He also emphasized the mutual learning of different civilizations, settling problems through dialogue and negotiations, and achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration in pursuing Asia-Pacific security.

"As an Asia-Pacific country, China anticipates stability in the region as China now focuses on developing its economy, improving peoples' living standards and avoiding the middle-income trap," said Jin Canrong, vice-dean of the International Studies School of Renmin University of China, during an interview at the sidelines of the seminar.

"The Asia-Pacific region is the growth area of the world with growing purchasing power and a huge middle class," said Colin Robertson, vice president of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, during an interview. "China's Belt and Road Initiative will certainly raise the potential for further globalization and commerce," he added.

Founded in 1985, the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament, being China's largest nationwide non-governmental peace association, has now established cooperation relations with over 300 peace organizations and security research institutes in over 90 countries and regions around the world.
