Officials in northern Pakistan said on Friday that miscreants attacked nearly 12 girls schools, causing damages of their buildings.

No one was injured as the schools were closed during the overnight attacks.

The attackers blew up at two schools while others were torched and ransacked in Diamer District in Gilgit-Baltistan region late Thursday, a major town in northern Pakistan, officials said.

A district spokesman said the miscreants burnt several under construction and some recently built schools.

TV footage showed damages to several buildings.

It was unclear as to who were behind the attacks and officials in the region said they have started investigation of the incident.

Previously Taliban militants were involved in attacks on schools in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

But this is the first time schools in northern areas, relatively peaceful region, came under the attack.

Officials said police on Friday launched search operation to apprehend the culprits.

In 2013, Taliban militants had killed nine foreign tourists in a deadly attack in Diamer district.
