Israeli security forces arrested Palestinian Authority's Jerusalem Governor Adnan Ghaith overnight between Saturday and Sunday, the police said.
Ghaith was arrested at his home in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem.
The reason for the arrest was not immediately clear but Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Israeli police, said that Ghaith was arrested "under Section 7 of the Implementation Act," a law dealing with interim agreement on the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
"This morning police will extend his remand," Rosenfeld added.
Palestinian media recently reported that Israel is preventing Ghaith and his predecessor, Adnan al-Husseini, from leaving the country after the two were allegedly involved in the arrest and investigation of a Palestinian who sold lands to Israelis, a forbidden transaction under the rules of the Palestinian National Authority. The merchant is a resident of East Jerusalem and holds a U.S. citizenship.
