Prosecutors in New York have reportedly requested documents from President Donald Trump's inauguration committee.

According to ABC News, a lawyer working with the committee received a subpoena Monday from federal prosecutors seeking documents related to the organization's donors and spending.

Prosecutors also showed interest in whether any foreigners illegally donated to the committee, The New York Times reported. Federal law prohibits foreign contributions to inaugural funds.

The Wall Street Journal reported in December that federal prosecutors were investigating whether the inaugural committee misspent some of the record 107 million U.S. dollars it had raised from donors.

The investigation is also reportedly examining whether some of the committee's donors gave money in exchange for policy concessions, influencing administration positions or access to the incoming administration.

The organization is still reviewing the subpoena but plans to cooperate with the investigation, according to The Times, citing a committee spokesman.

The investigation into the committee was sparked by the probe into Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer.

Cohen is expected to begin his three-year prison sentence in March after pleading guilty to campaign finance-related crimes in which he implicated the president.

Trump has slammed Cohen as "a weak person".

Cohen, 52, previously served as a vice-president of the Trump Organization and special counsel to Trump.
