Up to 10 local police personnel were killed as anti-government militants stormed security checkpoints in northern Baghlan province on Tuesday, a local official said on the condition of anonymity.
"A group of Taliban rebels stormed the checkpoints of Local Police in Baghlan-e-Markazi district early this morning triggering a gun battle, which left 10 local police personnel killed," the official told Xinhua but declined to be named, saying authorized officials would talk to the media.
Taliban militants also suffered casualties in the firefight, he asserted.
Local police is a local security entity composed of villagers to defend their community where the presence of national army or national police is slim to ensure law and order.
Meantime, provincial police chief Ekramudin Sari confirmed the fighting in Baghlan-e-Markzai district but did not comment on casualties.
Taliban militants who are in control of parts of Baghlan province have not commented on the attack.
