A paramilitary trooper was wounded Wednesday in a grenade attack in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The grenade was hurled towards paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at village Laroo in Kulgam district, about 72 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A CRPF person was wounded today after militants hurled a grenade towards his camp," a health official posted at Kulgam district hospital told Xinhua. "The CRPF person was hit by splinters."

Following the attack police and paramilitary troopers cordoned off the area to carry out search for the suspected persons, police said.

The attack triggered panic in the area, eyewitnesses said.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, a gunfight broke out at village Chakaroo in Pulwama district, about 40 km south of Srinagar.

"An exchange of fire broke out between militants and government forces in Pulwama," a police spokesman said. "Further details are awaited."

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
