Priyanka Gandhi, the sister of Indian National Congress (INC) president Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday assumed the charge of party's general secretary at the party office in Delhi.

Since the last general elections held in 2014, the INC has been the main opposition party in the country.

Priyanka's appointment was considered as the first step into her active politics, though in the past elections she campaigned in the parliamentary constituencies of her brother Rahul and mother Sonia Gandhi, the former INC president.

A couple of weeks ago, Rahul appointed Priyanka as the party's general secretary and made her the in-charge of eastern part of Uttar Pradesh.

There are a total of 80 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh out of the total 543 that go to polls every five years.

Both Rahul and his mother Sonia Gandhi represent Amethi and Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies, respectively, of Uttar Pradesh.

India will hold general elections sometime in April or May. The exact schedule of the polls is yet to be announced by the country's Election Commission.
