Albanian leaders welcomed on Wednesday the signing of NATO's accession protocol with Macedonia and called it a guarantee for the security and stability in the region.

"Congratulations to the visionary political leaders and citizens of Macedonia on this deserved achievement that encourages further progress of Macedonia, enhances security and regional stability and cements the Alliance of common Trans-Atlantic values. The right decision at the right time," Albanian President Ilir Meta wrote in a statement on Facebook.

The Albanian Minister of Defense Olta Xhacka called the signing of the NATO accession protocol with Macedonia a deserved achievement.

"The Alliance has opened its doors to welcome its 30th member in the large political-military family, a powerful strategic message to our neighbors and the region of the Western Balkans. As of today the region has bolstered its security, stability and peace," Xhacka said.

The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party Lulzim Basha also welcomed the signing of the accession protocol.

"NATO membership of Macedonia is a major event for our region. NATO enlargement to the Balkans is a decisive contribution to security, peace and values of democracy," Basha said.

Former Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati in a statement on Facebook said that signing of the NATO accession protocol is a testimony of the triumph of Euro-Atlantic values in our region.

"The vision and commitment shown through the dialogue of our two neighboring countries to end the dispute, which hindered for almost three decades the prospect of Euro-Atlantic integration, managed to put behind the divisions of the past and project a safer and more prosperous future for the region, Europe and the North Atlantic Alliance," Bushati wrote.
