United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, and the African Union (AU)'s Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ismail Sharqi, on Wednesday stressed their support for political settlement in Libya.

The two officials made their remarks during a meeting with Libya's eastern-based army commander, General Khalifa Haftar, in eastern Libya.

"The UN-AU delegation reiterated full support for a political settlement aimed at ending the transitional period in Libya," the UN Support Mission in Libya said.

On Tuesday, the delegation met with the Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj in the capital Tripoli and discussed the latest political and security developments in Libya, as well as future elections in the country.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political division between western and eastern governments.

The North African nation is struggling to make a democratic transition, despite signing a UN-sponsored political agreement by the Libyan parties later in 2015 and appointment of Serraj's unity government.
