United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Maria Fernanda Espinosa on Thursday highlighted Cuba's role as a "key ally" in promoting multilateralism and world peace in a volatile international context.

At a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, the high-ranking UN official thanked the island's leadership in and commitment to promoting a "democratic, fair and equal world order."

Espinosa said her visit to the Caribbean nation seeks to further strengthen the links between the UN and Havana.

"We are always pleased to know that Cuba is an essential and strategic ally to strengthen the multilateral system in complicated times, when world peace faces great challenges," said Espinosa.

She also praised the "vital, constructive and dynamic role" of the island in the UN and supporting the work of the UNGA.

"Cuba's leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement is well known, also in promoting diplomatic agendas for peace and Cuba is one of the main countries that fulfills the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," she said.

Rodriguez reiterated Havana's commitment to the UNGA, the "most universal, representative and democratic" UN body.

"We will continue participating in a constructive, flexible and active way in the work of the General Assembly under your leadership in an increasingly difficult and dangerous international situation," he said.

He expressed the island's willingness to collaborate with the UN in promoting a "fair" international order based on multilateralism, cooperation and dialogue.

Espinosa on Wednesday started a three-day visit to the island, where she will meet Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other government officials as well as leaders of social organizations.

She will also tour historical sites in the capital and deliver a keynote speech on Friday to students and professors of Cuba's Institute of International Relations.
