A Chinese envoy on Friday asked parties concerned in Colombia to give priority to the peace process between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

"China hopes that parties concerned in Colombia will give priority to the peace process, further broad consensus, continue to promote the full implementation of the peace agreement, strength the inclusive political dialogue, accelerate socio-economic reconstruction so as to ultimately realize peace and development," said Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations.

At present, the overall situation in Colombia is stable, as the peace process has achieved early harvest, and crop substitution and rural development, among others, have made progress. At the same time, the full implementation of the peace agreement still faces challenges, thus requiring continued efforts by the Colombian parties and the international community, Wu told the Security Council.

As Colombia experienced a long civil war, the implementation of the peace agreement in a comprehensive manner concerns numerous issues, such as politics, security, development, and social integration. It is, therefore, a systematic project, he said.

China takes note of the recently emerged divergent views over the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, an extrajudicial court system to try ex-FARC rebels, said Wu.

China hopes that the parties concerned will strengthen dialogue and consultation to facilitate the appropriate resolution of this issue, he said.

China hopes that the UN Verification Mission in Colombia will continue to perform its duties as mandated, help the Colombian parties enhance communication, build up trust and push for synergies to carry forward the peace process, he said.

China stands ready to work with other members of the Security Council to contribute to the furtherance of the Colombian peace process and the early realization of comprehensive peace, stability and development in the country, he added.
