An armed American woman who officials said was infatuated with a school massacre 20 years ago was found dead on Wednesday. Her threats had triggered a massive police manhunt and the closing of hundreds of schools in the Denver area, the U.S. state of Colorado.

"We can confirm that Sol Pais is deceased. We are grateful to everyone who submitted tips and to all our law enforcement partners for their efforts in keeping our community safe," tweeted FBI Denver on Wednesday morning, noting that there was no longer a threat to the community.

After a massive manhunt along the Front Range and foothills west of Denver, Pais was found dead by suicide Wednesday morning near the base of Mt. Evans, a local news outlet, KMGH 7 Denver, reported, citing multiple high-ranking sources.

Pais is reportedly a student at Miami Beach High School. She had been hunted by police and FBI since Tuesday.

Schools in the Denver area were closed Wednesday as authorities were searching for Pais. The 18-year-old girl who was infatuated with the 1999 Columbine massacre traveled to Colorado on Monday night and then bought a pump action shotgun and ammunition in a store. She was described as "extremely dangerous" by police and FBI.

April 20 is the 20th anniversary of the Columbine massacre. Two twelfth grade students attacked Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, on April 20, 1999, killing 12 classmates and a teacher. It's the deadliest shooting at a high school in U.S. history at the time.
